My style of game.

I love myself some really difficult game. Game that gives you the feeling of putting you on the edge, all the time. The game that took months to finish it. So considering this, i thought i would enjoy cuphead. And i was completely wrong, and i think why this is happen, i think its best to compare with some of my other favourite difficult game, and see what makes this game distasteful for me, but also whats make this game unique compare to others.
General thoughts.
What you think of difficult game, you always think of games that looks impossible to manage, and impossible to pass, ones that generally more chaotic than others, tho this is not the case. A difficulty can be in objective and subjective form, we can clearly see something is really hard. Flash game, that is made half ass and just for fun, are objectively easy. Everyone can pass it with mental capacity, but when come to hard game, it started to be a bit more subjective, and this all can be said with talents. But i guess we can save for other post.
Here, i gonna talk about cuphead, and compare with furi and touhou, 2 other difficult game that i find myself enjoying it, even if dont have the mental capacity to pass touhou
Bullet everywhere!
These 3 games have a very different game mechanic, but revolve in 1 concept. Bullet hell. Bullet flying everywhere, comes from every corner, it revolve in the same concept. The difficulty comes from that, tho the added difficulty is the mechanic of the game, or even, the genre of the game.
Furi
If you read my reviews about the furi a few years back, you know i adore furi for its sheer stylish and difficulty. Furi bullet hell section are made in pattern that is meant to be dodge, or atleast seen as able to dodge. Those are made very carefully and it gives a really good impression of a difficult but fair game. Those section are hardcoded into the game, and it will give you the same pattern eveytime, you just need to able to read and react. A few practice and you are able to dodge it. The key with furi is consistant. Which is why practicing it a lot in the same pattern will help you pass it.
Touhou
Touhou is one of those difficult game that i can never pass, and i love it. Again, the main point as bullet hell, and well this is the most hellish one out of those three. The difficult of this game on lunatic is unimaginable, it is made with a god like movement. 90% of the time, the screen will covered in bullet and you will die over and over and over. But just like i said, Each pattern are hardcoded and are made to be able to dodge, tho this one is just worse. As you play, your progress made are so little, you wont even notice you are making progress. The game is just that difficult, it will took months to pass it. and once again, it passable.
Cuphead
Cuphead is definitely something unique, having boss fight only battle on a platformer/bullethell game is certainly something. You wont see people dodging hundreds of bullet on a platformer game ever since megaman came out. Tho that where my gripe is. Its a platformer, and while i like platformer, i never had a full control of it due to the very nature of it. Which is completely different with touhou and furi. You jumping and moving ability is limited eiher your character on the ground or not, and moving left and right in mid air does not work well due to falling. Not to mention it small platforming place is real small that dodging is a cramp, and the attack are sometimes impossible to dodge, due to how the nature of platformer and how slow platforming can be. It is something that i find lacking in touhou and furi due to them not being a platformer and also having a wider space to work with. It feel unfair, not to mention cuphead only have 3 health, which limited even more with having to restart the boss again, not something you want to look forward too.
Conclusion
Look, we all know cuphead is a great game, and i have no denial of it. Tho i cant seem to enjoy it as much as other people do. I find it the game is pretty unfair, and really consistancy require is not that lot either. Each boss is not that long and even if you memorize those attack, the attack is a little bit unconsistant. But hey, this is just my opinion. Dont take this and assu,e this is a hate. Its just something i feel like i wanna to tell.
